12 Ensemble returns to the Golden Age of Hollywood and the composers that became its celebrities

Shostakovich's influence on the scene can be clearly heard in Bernard Hermann's iconic score to Psycho, whilst Waxman and Korngold's work drip with the glamour and romance of the 50's silverscreen. Selections from Jonny Greenwood's wistful score to Phantom Thread take us  before the programme ends with Barber's tragic Adagio for Strings

BEETHOVEN  'Serioso' String Quartet
CAROLINE SHAW  Entr'acte

The Beethoven effect

The ‘Serioso’ quartet was an experiment; music written by a rebel pushing the boundaries of possibility. This spirit of innovation is celebrated in a programme which includes a work by Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Caroline Shaw alongside a new arrangement of Janáček’s turbulent ‘Kreutzer Sonata’.
