Oliver Leith - Honey Siren
Performed live at the Wigmore Hall, March 2021. Oliver Leith - Honey Siren I. (Like thick air) II. (Full like drips) III. (Like slow dancing in honey) Oliver wrote this piece especially for the 12 ensemble in 2019. He writes; "I was thinking about sirens; the wailing kind, not the bird women singing on rocks. They make these beautiful, huge oblong sweeping glissandi between high and low, like a machine crying. They usually signal something ominous; these sirens do not. They are honeyed, dripping in globules of sweetness, golden and moving between solid and fluid. Like a smiling alarm.”

Leonard Elschenbroich & 12ensemble perform James Macmillan's 'Kiss on Wood'
We look forward to welcoming the shining 12ensemble back to Kings Place on 26 Sep 2020 for their rescheduled performance (Max Richter: 'The Four Seasons' Recomposed). In the meantime, here’s a rare Easter gem from their Cello Unwrapped concert with Leonard Elschenbroich in 2017. ‘I always think of this beautiful piece, Kiss on Wood, as a love letter from string players to their instruments. Composer James Macmillan’s original inspiration was the Good Friday verse ‘Behold the wood of the cross on which the saviour of the world was hung’. But he also said it ‘can equally represent a gesture of love on the wooden instruments making this music’. Helen Wallace, Artistic Director at Kings Place
